How many plys?

I have a question: On your pictures I noticed that some (all?) of you are stitching with only one ply of thread? I started mine with two plys as stated on the HAED homepage and, if I remember correctly, also in the description of the design. Have I misunderstood something or is there a reason you are stitching with only one ply.

I look forward to your answers.

Hugs
Billie

Hi Billie - It is basically a matter of choice. I did a few tests and found that 2 on 25 count was just to bulky and extremely hard to stitch. I personally like 1 on 28 count. I do stitch with 1 thread on 25 count. Just do a couple of test patches and then decide what you like.

Hello Billie !
I'm stitching my HAED piece on Dublin 25 count with 2 plys of threads. I did many tests before starting to stitch, and i found it better with 2 threads. In my opinion, you should do some test before you start, and then choose what you are the most comfortable with, and what you find the most beautiful.
I hope this can helps you !
And the chart that you have chosen is simply wonderful...

There are no hard and fast rules really about stitching any project. I'm stitching mine on 28 count fabric and using 2 plys was too bulky. If you like the look and are able to work easily with 2 plys on yours, go for it!

Hi Billie,

I'm stitching on 18 count aida with 2 plys. This covers more the fabric. My design will be a little bigger than it says on the pattern because I'm stitching it on 18 count aida.

I also stitch on 18ct aida and use two strands of floss. It's really about what floats your boat.

Take a scrap of whatever ct fabric you're using and make a couple of blocks up of one and then of two strands, and see which you like better. :D

I use two plys but that is what looks good for me--I think it makes the colors bolder. It really is a matter of personal choice.

I'm stitching one over one on 32ct. I did several test patches before I settled with this though. There is no hard and fast rule. You do what suits you.

Thank you so much for your input. I actually like the few stitches I made so far with two plys and I think I will stick with it. I was just wondering if I had misunderstood something. I also hope I will be able to show you a new picture very soon.

I did test patches, and just liked the 1 ply with 28 count, 2 ply was too bulky

I tested before I started and liked 1 over 1 on the 25ct. dublin linen I'm using....however some x's have wonderful coverage, some don't.

I am using 2 ply.... which is almost always what I do... in certain instances however - different projects take more or less... Hope you enjoy your project! It is definitely better to be comfortable in the beginning with your choices so that you get it completed ;)so much better than a wip tossed aside.... ( i have those) :(

I actually started my first Haed with 2 strands over 1 thread on 25ct. But found it was just too bulky for my tastes. So I switched to 1 strand over 1 thread and I loved it. MUCH smoother and faster stitching for me.

It's all preference really.

I'm doing 2 over 1 on 25 ct, but if I had to do it again, which I will since I just purchased more designs, I would do 1 over 1 on 25 ct, this is very bulky and at times difficult to pass the needle through. My next project will be on 18ct, only because I got a great buy on a 6 yard piece, but on that I will use 2 ply as I did something once on 18ct with 1 ply and did not like the coverage. So, it's all in what you like.
