OK, I'm gonna ask-Gridding

I've never had the desire, or need, to grid before, but last week showed me a time or two where it would have been helpful! I've learned a lot from seeing your projects, specifically that there are many different ways to grid, that you can grid as you go, and that some pull grid lines before stitching and others don't.

So I searched the Internet for instructions, found many, but they all left me with a "No thanks, that's not for me" feeling. So I'm hoping if some of you have time over the next couple of days, would you share your technique? Or do you have a link to instructions that you like and use?

Sabione, I never felt the need to grid, and I still don't. All I do is counting on the sidebars (top and right side) and eevery tenth row I grid a small part. You can see it on my works. For me it's enough, maybe you feel the same way.

I started gridding large projects many years ago when I did my first TW and have continued. I usually grid a project before I start stitching and grid the entire canvas. However, my HAED Storykeep I didn't think I would need to grid (it's so small) so didn't do it until I had already completed more than 50 rows -- which was more difficult to grid that way for me. I use fishing line so do not take it out as I go because it comes out so easily after I'm done stitching. The fishing line can very easily be moved out of the way when I want to put in a stitch that will "cross over" the line itself. Gridding is such a pain in the b--t to do that I want to get it all done at one time, I'm pretty sure I would not be comfortable doing a little bit here and a little bit there. This is probably not much help for you. I think you have to find what fits your comfort level, so keep looking and try a couple different methods and go with the one that you like the best.

I haven't felt the need to grid. The pieces I am working on have backgrounds. But I have a couple of patterns without the background and gridding would be very helpful. I also do a little bit of quilting and have been known to use my rotary mat and cutter to cut out smaller pieces of cross stitch fabric for smaller projects. But quilters use pens to mark thier quilts for quilting that either wash out with water or disappear after 12 hours or so. I can't find my pen, but I want to try griding with the washable pen on some smaller projects first before I try it on a HAED. What do you think?

I gridded for the first time and I'm very enthousiastic for now! I used a pen with ink that is very easy to remove with water. And when I stitched over it, the lines aren't visible anymore. I like this, because gridding takes little time this way and I don't need to remove anything during stitching.
THis Saturday I will show a photo of my progress on The wizard of Oz. I couldn't stitch tonight, I was away during the day and evening and I just checked this blog before going to sleep. Good night!

Michiko got me gridding with a quilting pen. I had seen hers on and thought it looked good. It is easier, I think, to draw a line, than to grid with thread. Just make sure to use a washable pen if you try this.

I didn't do the gridding yet, but I started to park my threads and I love doing it, I think it goes a little faster by doing this.
